![]() - No focus on what is essential for surgeryPros: *Organized by chapter and detailed *Lots of nice images and diagrams *Fits in your pocket Cons: *No emphasis whatsoever on what you have to know *Lots of extraneous material *Somewhat outdated now, especially their basic science coverage Fiser's book is a great book that fits in your pocket. I used the first edition and was very happy with it. However, the same complaints I had with the first edition continue with this latest incarnation. This second edition book doesn't do a good job at all with covering what you really have to konw for surgery. There are lots of extraneous details and numerous inaccuracies that really prevent you from getting the take home mesasge. I found that I had to go through the book three or four times to really figure out what I needed to know for the exam, and I barely had time to do all of that preparation. There is really poor organization throughout individual sections and individual topics don't cover what you really have to know to do well on the ABSITE. The nice thing about this book is that it fits into your pocket. You can use it whenver you have some downtime. However, I found it really hard to focus and retain the information. It's nothing but a series of disjointed lines!! I don't need to read bullets all day! I recommend the Clinical Review of Surgery - ABSITE Edition instead. It's far easier to read, even if it doesn't fit in your pocket. Clinical Review of Surgery - ABSITE Edition Rating: - Better than the first editionThis second edition of the absite review book is even easier to read, with more pertinent diagrams, algorithms and important info for the test. Highly recommended as a principle sourse of review for your absite. Rating: - Very good, if used correctlyI'm a surgical intern about to take the ABSITE for the first time in a few short weeks. I have been carrying the 2nd edition of Fiser with me everywhere I go for the last 2 months or so. It is great for those 5 minute downtimes while waiting for room turnover or while the MVC is in the scanner. The new edition is easier on the eyes with the color images (yay pictures!). While there may still be small errors, for the most part this book gives you great, concise, important information on the major areas of Gen. Surgery. One good strategy is to read a chapter in your main text, then read the corresponding chapter in Fiser during downtime the next day or two, then do questions on the subject. Rating: - Excellent study toolI used this ABSITE review last year for my in-service and scored very highly. Granted I read the book three times and memorized the whole thing. But the point is, the book is excellent and it's a great review of at least the junior version of the test. But like all tests, you have to study for it and time always makes a difference, which is something we all don't have. But still, with the little time we do have, making it through the book at least once will definitely help to raise anyone's score, though it may not feel like it. The tiny text and bullet format may be difficult to read but a small price to pay for a 99% on the ABSITE. Rating: - ABSITE reviewQuick, dense, high yield. Gotta have this in your library during surgical residency for that once a year test we all love so ... the ABSITE. |
