  - Comparison to Schaum'sOf course, one can (and should) buy a decent used textbook, which try and explain most of the concepts to you (using algebraic proof derivations, and real-world examples). But textbooks lack something, which is why REA and Schaum's have succeeded as supplements. For example, if you need extra practice on a topic, and your textbook does not give many problems, then Schaum's will have plenty of extra problems for you. But although Schaum's is very thorough, covering every conceivable topic, sub-topic and even rigorous proofs, their solutions are often too succinct, leaving out several steps. This is where REA's Problem Solver comes in. REA solutions are often very long, which is a good sign--it means they are explaining each step! Although a thorough understanding of pre-calc algebra and trig is not possible for everyone except the mathematically-inclined, a thorough familiarization and problem-solving skills can be had by: a) learning the concepts and proofs from textbooks b) doing as many different problems as possible (textbook + Schaum's) c) understanding how to do any kind of problem, and understanding the steps (REA) One commenter said the book does not have much in the way of graphing. However, there are thorough chapters on graphing linear eq's and quadratic eq's as well as conic sections, and plenty of graphs. This book does not seem to have the Theory of Equations, however, separated as a topic, although it does seem to include some of the root rules in some of the problems. Inverse and Rational functions don't seem to be covered, either. However, these are very small omissions that can be found in your textbook and, considering the scope and depth of this outstanding volume, can be overlooked in regards to total value. Don't let the old-fashioned courier font put you off; these Problem Solvers are real gems. If you feel weak on understanding how to algebra problems, this will help. In the back are word problems involving coins, investments, work, mixtures, etc. Go to the REA website to see the table of contents. Rating: - very useful for reference and problem solving technique.I really like this book. It shows you how to "think" as you are doing the problem and the methodology used to arrive at the problem. I often get textbooks and see the example and it works fine and I can do a problem if its JUST LIKE THAT but then the author gets cute and changes everything about the problem so that it is unrecognizable as the problem you just learned how to solve and then you are stuck again. This problem helps me with stuff like that. Rating:  - despairafter examining this solver ý have come to the conclusion that turkish math solvers for college students are more helpful and comprehensive.Therefore I advise college students of the world to find these books on Turkish on-line booksellers. Rating: - Great, but not completeThis book is great if you want to brush up on algebraic skills and it involves a step by step process for each solution. It is a great solution guide except for one little flaw: it does not contain much graphing. As I am myself in an algebra class, I know that you must be able to graph many different types of equations, and this book doesn't cover graphing thoroughly. Otherwise, it is a great book and i recommend it for anyone who really needs help in algebra. Rating: - Companion to the educated and teachersIn order to learn your subject more effectively there are a number of ways to go by products: Buy a software tool with questions, answers and a mathematical engine to calculate interactively for you, step by step with additional graphical representation or run a software tool as Maple 6 or Maple 7 ( a CAS ( Computer Algebra System ) ) or buy a problem solver book in addition to your textbook. Although Maple is an advanced tool that covers almost all you ever need in education its evaluation techniques differs on major points completely from the way you would do (evaluate for educational purposes) mathematics on paper introducing also a number of programmatic structures which is highly complex because of how Maple evaluates. For instance a function specification in Maple is not a function altogether:what you've learn or have learned in school. Maple is therefore more or less excluded from eduction in college level mathematics and I would say also in higher eduction since it impose to much time to learn properly and is to error prone to use even after extensive reading of the supplied tutorial at the products website. Therefore a choice between a learning tool or additional book is to prefer. The problem solver is a powerful tool for learning since it stresses on focusing from several points of views regarding type problems. It also facilitates a repetitive learning experience. Each chapter is dedicated to a certain subject area. Back in the index is a complete list of keywords with referenced problem numbers after them. The Question is immidietly followed by an explanatory answer which solves the problem, sometimes in several different ways. Read the textbook first then do the stuff in the problem solver. |
