![]() - Many errorsI purchased this book before the most recent review prior to mine appeared. After using the text, I have to agree with that user...it simply has too many errors to make it useful as a review book for someone reviewing for the ABSITE or General Surgery Boards. While it may be appropriate and useful for the student to review for his/her Surgery Shelf exam, I wouldn't trust it for the more senior exams. Frankly, too many of these review books have sloppy editing and incorrect answers to make me feel comfortable recommending many of them. I understand that there is a large and profitable market for such books, but the authors putting these things out should feel embarassed to produce such sloppy work. Rating: - AverageQuick and easy to read. However, many topics are too general. Others have too much unimportant (too verbose) information. Can theoretically read cover to cover in a week or so. A decent ABSITE prep. Rating: - Great readI have used many resources available for the ABSITE including reading Washington Manual, Fiser's Absite Review, MSU notes, etc. Although not comprehensive, this book provides high yield information which can even help for oral boards as well as surgical rotations: ie, I used a chapter from transplant for my rotation, reading this chapter in advance made my senior resident look stupid! I knew many pimp questions just from reading the bullet points. Hence, go get the book...look smart! Rating: - would use it again!!good, concise review. you can easily finish it in two weeks. great for reviewing the subspecialties. the QA format is nice. chapters are written by residents... i used it in prep for the qualifying exam...and passed!!! Rating: - good concept, unfortunately not well doneAfter reading the other reviews and leafing through the online book pages, I thought this would be a great book to review as a medical student prior to the Shelf. However, going through just the second chapter resulted in numerous errors. The most glaring being the most likely cause of hypercalcemia, which was alleged to be familial hypercalcuria hypercalcemia (in reality it is parathyroid adenoma in the general population, malignancy in the hospital). This is a very basic question, which made me question the rest of the book. Leafing through other parts of the book, I found more errors, and have decided to return the book. Although the concept of the book is great, the author should have invested some time in fact-checking. |
