  - Nikon Camera, I like to take a photograph...insert music hereThe Nikon D40 is my first DSLR. For the price, it is a great starter camera. I've had mine for about two years now and I have taken it everywhere I travel to. The D40 is small compare to other DSLRs therefore it is a great camera to travel with. The KIT lens works wonderful for traveling also. Although is not telephoto, it is pretty wide for some cool shots. I also bought a 50mm 1.8 f/stop lens to complement my D40. This is where the D40 lacks features. It does not have an autofocus motor in the body. I have to manual focus with that particular lens which could be a hassle at times. The camera has lasted me for quite some time now and it seems that it still could handle much more. I am really happy with my purchase. If you want a starter DSLR camera the D40 is the perfect camera for you. If you will be interchanging lenses with this camera I would not recommend it because of the lack of the autofocus motor in the body. Rating:  - One of Nikon's all-time bestI shoot images professionally using larger, "better" cameras, but I find myself still (after three and a half years) using my D40 all the time. My D40 + 18-200VR lens combination is my "lives in my car all the time, ready to go" kit. The low-light performance is superb, especially considering it's a 2006-era camera. No, it's not as good as a D300s, D90, or FX-sensor camera, but it costs a fraction as much. Of all the cameras I own, the D40 makes the best JPEGs straight out of camera. If I know I need a shot in the field that I'm not going to be able to take back to the office and run through my usual Lightroom post-processing, then I reach for the D40, despite having thousands of dollars of other cameras at my disposal. It's that good. Another great feature missing from even my pro bodies is the 1/500th flash sync. This is handy for sunny days or when i have to shoot at noon and need fill flash to avoid dark shadows under the subjects' eyes. Even a D300s tops out at 1/250th (1/320th with an external flash). I cannot recommend this body enough to someone interested in photography, either as a first SLR or as a "backup" body. The included 18-55 lens is superb for its price/size, as well. Rating:  - Do not buy the Nikon D40 - it breaks right after the warranty expiresDo not buy the Nikon d40. It breaks way too easy. Ours broke twice just after the warranty expired and then six months later and then a third time and we gave up. We send it in twice to get fixed. They would not tell us how much to fix it until we sent it in and then they held us hostage to pay them and we thought they were charging us way too much. They charged us just enough to not justify buying a new one each time. After three times the Nikon D40 broke, we gave up and bought a different brand. I will not give out the brand name of our new camera because I don't want anyone to think we work for them. We are very happy with our new camera and it is not a Nikon. The first time the flash would not work. The 2nd time the camera would not take pictures in the autofocus mode. It would take pictures in manual focus only and they would be blurry. The Nikon D40 breaks way too early. Please do not buy this camera. Nikon is horrible to deal with. I will never buy another Nikon camera again. Rating: - Love it!I love this camera, it's small, it's durable, it's got an incredible battery life and it take high quality pictures. I've never owned another dslr but this is a huge improvement on my Nikon point and shoot camera. I've owned it for a year and a half and it has never caused any problems. It takes excellent pictures, I particularly like the crisp field of focus. The battery last so long I loose the charger between chargings. Truly it is an all around great camera. I have never owned another DSLR to compare it to, but for this price there aren't many options. I did own a point and shoot before I bought the Nikon d40 and I planned on keeping both of them, the smaller for situations when I might loose or damage it, or I don't want to carry a big camera. But after a couple weeks I couldn't bring myself to use the little camera knowing the d40 could take such superior pictures. Even in situations where the camera was at risk! -Alex Rating: - Good for starters but would love more featuresIf you are trying to venture into the photography world with SLRs this is absolutely recommended. The Image quality is just amazing. Although this camera is just a step into SLR photography I would have atleast loved to have some basic features like: * Video recording * Higher resolution support (6MP doesnt suffice hunger of a passionate photographer) Cheer! |
